Low-hanging fruit of Python3 compatibility work. I've left fix_py_compile.py as it is only ever going to be run under Python 2.

Loopback test with SPI0
- Connect wire from P9_18 [SPI0_D1] and P9_21 [SPI0_D0]
- Reference: P9 header pins
