Add selective collect to memory allocations
By selectively collecting an allocation, we can skip scanning many
allocations for pointers because we know up front they won't have
them. This helps a ton when large buffers are being used and memory is
slow (PSRAM). In one Fruit Jam example GC times drop from 80+ms to
~25ms. The example uses a number of bitmaps that are now no longer
scanned.

40e1c111e1 py/gc: Allow gc_free from inside a gc_sweep finalizer.
Do this by tracking being inside gc collection with a
separate flag, GC_COLLECT_FLAG. In gc_free(),
ignore this flag when determining if the heap is locked.

* For finalisers calling gc_free() when heap is otherwise unlocked,
  this allows memory to be immediately freed (potentially
  avoiding a MemoryError).

* Hard IRQs still can't call gc_free(), as heap will be locked via
  gc_lock().

* If finalisers are disabled then all of this code can be compiled
  out to save some code size.

3883f29485 py/modthread: Initialise nlr_jump_callback_top on threads.
The main thread gets this because the thread state is in bss, but
subsequent threads need this field to be initialised.

Also added a note to mpstate.h to help avoid missing this in the future.

2dcd745434 py/gc: Speed up incremental GC cycles by tracking the last used block.
In applications that use little memory and run GC regularly, the cost of
the sweep phase quickly becomes prohibitives as the amount of RAM
increases.

On an ESP32-S3 with 2 MB of external SPIRAM, for example, a trivial GC
cycle takes a minimum of 40ms, virtually all of it in the sweep phase.

Similarly, on the UNIX port with 1 GB of heap, a trivial GC takes 47 ms,
again virtually all of it in the sweep phase.

This commit speeds up the sweep phase in the case most of the heap is empty
by keeping track of the ID of the highest block we allocated in an area
since the last GC.

The performance benchmark run on PYBV10 shows between +0 and +2%
improvement across the existing performance tests.  These tests don't
really stress the GC, so they were also run with gc.threshold(30000) and
gc.threshold(10000).  For the 30000 case, performance improved by up to
+10% with this commit.  For the 10000 case, performance improved by at
least +10% on 6 tests, and up to +25%.

5e50975a6d py/modsys: Allow sys.path to be assigned to.
Previously sys.path could be modified by append/pop or slice assignment.

This allows `sys.path = [...]`, which can be simpler in many cases, but
also improves CPython compatibility.

It also allows sys.path to be set to a tuple which means that you can
clear sys.path (e.g. temporarily) with no allocations.

This also makes sys.path (and sys.argv for consistency) able to be disabled
via mpconfig. The unix port (and upytesthelper) require them, so they
explicitly verify that they're enabled.

7d2ee8aed0 py/mpconfig: Enable module delegation if sys needs it.
Otherwise you can get into the confusing state where e.g. sys.ps1 is
enabled in config (via `MICROPY_PY_SYS_PS1_PS2`) but still doesn't actually
get enabled.

Also verify that the required delegation options are enabled in modsys.c.

2757acf6ed py/nlr: Implement jump callbacks.
NLR buffers are usually quite large (use lots of C stack) and expensive to
push and pop.  Some of the time they are only needed to perform clean up if
an exception happens, and then they re-raise the exception.

This commit allows optimizing that scenario by introducing a linked-list of
NLR callbacks that are called automatically when an exception is raised.
They are essentially a light-weight NLR handler that can implement a
"finally" block, i.e. clean-up when an exception is raised, or (by passing
`true` to nlr_pop_jump_callback) when execution leaves the scope.

d54208a2ff py/scheduler: Implement VM abort flag and mp_sched_vm_abort().
This is intended to be used by the very outer caller of the VM/runtime.  It
allows setting a top-level NLR handler that can be jumped to directly, in
order to forcefully abort the VM/runtime.

Enable using:

    #define MICROPY_ENABLE_VM_ABORT (1)

Set up the handler at the top level using:

dcb650c513 pico w: add ssl module
Note: at this time, the ssl module on pico_w never verifies the server

bcc827d695 py/gc: Allow the GC heap to be split over multiple memory areas.
This commit adds a new option MICROPY_GC_SPLIT_HEAP (disabled by default)
which, when enabled, allows the GC heap to be split over multiple memory
areas/regions.  The first area is added with gc_init() and subsequent areas
can be added with gc_add().  New areas can be added at runtime.  Areas are
stored internally as a linked list, and calls to gc_alloc() can be
satisfied from any area.

This feature has the following use-cases (among others):
- The ESP32 has a fragmented OS heap, so to use all (or more) of it the
  GC heap must be split.
- Other MCUs may have disjoint RAM regions and are now able to use them
  all for the GC heap.
- The user could explicitly increase the size of the GC heap.
- Support a dynamic heap while running on an OS, adding more heap when
  necessary.

and remaining config files.

fc3d7ae11b py/make_root_pointers: Add MP_REGISTER_ROOT_POINTER parser/generator.
This adds new compile-time infrastructure to parse source code files for
`MP_REGISTER_ROOT_POINTER()` and generates a new `root_pointers.h` header
file containing the collected declarations.  This works the same as the
existing `MP_REGISTER_MODULE()` feature.

c49d5207e9 py/persistentcode: Remove unicode feature flag from .mpy file.
Prior to this commit, even with unicode disabled .py and .mpy files could
contain unicode characters, eg by entering them directly in a string as
utf-8 encoded.

The only thing the compiler disallowed (with unicode disabled) was using
\uxxxx and \Uxxxxxxxx notation to specify a character within a string with
value >= 0x100; that would give a SyntaxError.

With this change mpy-cross will now accept \u and \U notation to insert a
character with value >= 0x100 into a string (because the -mno-unicode
option is now gone, there's no way to forbid this).  The runtime will
happily work with strings with such characters, just like it already works
with strings with characters that were utf-8 encoded directly.

This change simplifies things because there are no longer any feature
flags in .mpy files, and any bytecode .mpy will now run on any target.

75506e496f py/scheduler: Add support for scheduling static C-based callbacks.
If MICROPY_SCHEDULER_STATIC_NODES is enabled then C code can declare a
static mp_sched_node_t and schedule a callback using
mp_sched_schedule_node().  In contrast to using mp_sched_schedule(), the
node version will have at most one pending callback outstanding, and will
always be able to schedule if there is nothing already scheduled on this
node.  This guarantees that the the callback will be called exactly once
after it is scheduled.

01cabb0324 Merge tag 'v1.18'
Boosted performance, board.json metadata, more mimxrt, rp2, samd features

This release of MicroPython sees a boost to the overall performance of the
VM and runtime.  This is achieved by the addition of an optional cache to
speed up general hash table lookups, as well as a fast path in the VM for
the LOAD_ATTR opcode on instance types.  The new configuration options are
MICROPY_OPT_MAP_LOOKUP_CACHE and MICROPY_OPT_LOAD_ATTR_FAST_PATH.  As part
of this improvement the MICROPY_OPT_CACHE_MAP_LOOKUP_IN_BYTECODE option has
been removed, which provided a similar map caching mechanism but with the
cache stored in the bytecode, which made it not useful on bare metal ports.
The new mechanism is measured to be at least as good as the old one,
applies to more map lookups, has a constant RAM overhead, and applies to
native code as well as bytecode.

These performance options are enabled on the esp32, mimxrt, rp2, stm32 and
unix ports.  For esp32 and mimxrt some code is also moved to RAM to further
boost performance.  On stm32, performance increases by about 20% for
benchmarks that are heavy on name lookups, like misc_pystone.py and
misc_raytrace.py.  On esp32 performance can increase by 2-3x, and on mimxrt
it is up to 6x.

All boards in all ports now have a board.json metadata file, which is used
to automatically build firmware and generate a webpage for that board
(among other possibilities).  Auto-build scripts have been added for this
purpose and they build all esp32, mimxrt, rp2, samd and stm32 boards.  The
generated output is available at https://micropython.org/download.

Support for FROZEN_DIR and FROZEN_MPY_DIR has been deprecated for some time
and was finally removed in this release.  Instead of these, FROZEN_MANIFEST
can be used.  The io.resource_stream() function is also removed, replaced
by the pure Python version in micropython-lib.

The search order for importing frozen Python modules is now controlled by
the ".frozen" entry in sys.path.  This string is added by default in the
second position in sys.path.  User code should adjust sys.path depending on
the desired behaviour.  Putting ".frozen" first in sys.path will speed up
importing frozen modules.

A bug in multiple precision integers with bitwise of -0 was fixed in commit
2c139bbf4e.

The platform module has been added to allow querying the compiler and
underlying SDK/HAL/libc version.  This is enabled on esp32, mimxrt and
stm32 ports.

The mpremote tool now supports seek, flush, mkdir and rmdir on PC-mounted
filesystems.  And a help command has been added.

The documentation has seen many additions and improvements thanks (for a
second time) to the Google Season of Docs project.  The rp2 documentation
now includes a reference for PIO assembly instructions, a PIO quick
reference and a PIO tutorial.  The random and stm modules have been
documented, along with sys.settrace, manifest.py files and mpremote.  There
is also now more detail about the differences between MicroPython and
standard Python 3.5 and above.

The esp32 port sees support for ESP32-S3 SoCs, and new boards GENERIC_S3,
ESP32_S2_WROVER, LOLIN_S2_MINI, LOLIN_S2_PICO and UM_FEATHERS2NEO.  The PWM
driver has been improved and now supports all PWM timers and channels, and
the duty_u16() and duty_ns() methods, and it keeps the duty constant when
changing frequency.  The machine.bitstream() function has been improved to
use RMT, with an option to select the original bit-banging implementation.

The mimxrt port gained new hardware features: SDRAM and SD card support, as
well as network integration with a LAN driver.  The machine.WDT class was
added along with the machine.reset_cause(), machine.soft_reset(),
machine.unique_id() add machine.bitstream() functions.  DHT sensor support
was added, and f-strings were enabled.

The rp2 port now has support for networking, and bluetooth using NimBLE.
The Nina-W10 WiFi/BT driver is fully integrated and supported by the new
Arduino Nano RP2040 connect board.  I2S protocol support is added along
with a machine.bitstream() driver and DHT sensor support.  The PWM driver
had a bug fix with the accuracy of setting/getting the frequency, and the
duty value is now retained when changing the frequency.

On the samd port there is now support for the internal flash being a block
device, and for filesystems and the os module.  Pin and LED classes have
been implemented.  There are more time functions, more Python features
enabled, and the help() function is added.  SEEED_WIO_TERMINAL and
SEEED_XIAO board definitions are now available.

The stm32 port now has support for F427, F479 and H7A3(Q)/H7B3(Q) MCUs, and
new board definitions for VCC_GND_H743VI, OLIMEX_H407, MIKROE_QUAIL,
GARATRONIC_PYBSTICK26_F411, STM32H73B3I_DK.  A bug was fixed in the SPI
driver where a SPI transfer could fail if the CYW43 WiFi driver was also
active at the same time.

On the windows port the help() function has been enabled, and support for
build variants added, to match the unix port.

The zephyr port upgraded Zephyr to v2.7.0.

The change in code size since the previous release for various ports is

- rp2: machine.I2S and other new hardware features
- samd: filesystem support and other new hardware features

18b1ba086c py/qstr: Separate hash and len from string data.
This allows the compiler to merge strings: e.g. "update",
"difference_update" and "symmetric_difference_update" will all point to the
same memory.

No functional change.

The size reduction depends on the number of qstrs in the build.  The change
this commit brings is:

minimal x86:  +150 +0.092% [incl +48(data)]
   unix x64:  -608 -0.118%
unix nanbox:  -572 -0.126% [incl +32(data)]

fe9ffff9c0 py/mpstate.h: Only include sys.path/argv objects in state when enabled.
The mp_sys_path_obj and mp_sys_argv_obj objects are only used by the
runtime and accessible from Python if MICROPY_PY_SYS is enabled.  So
exclude them from the runtime state if this option is disabled.

de43b500bd py/runtime: Allow initialising sys.path/argv with defaults.
If MICROPY_PY_SYS_PATH_ARGV_DEFAULTS is enabled (which it is by default)
then sys.path and sys.argv will be initialised and populated with default
values.  This keeps all bare-metal ports aligned.
